七大家族 (部首遊戲) 7 Families (Bushou game)

There are many homophonic characters in Chinese, regardless of dialect. This can cause confusion or miswriting, especially when it concerns names, be it the name of a person, a shop, a street or a building. In this case, there is no context for us to guess which character would be the right one, and it is important that we know exactly how it is written.

In English, or any other language that uses an alphabet, it would be easy to ask for the spelling of a word.

In Chinese, if you were told it’s the character / hú/, how do you ask exactly which /hú/ it is?

This is the time when bushou and bujian (common part) come in handy. Often, you would be told that it is 古月「胡」, or the one with the 米 bushou, or the one with the 三點水 bushou. This usually is enough for instant clarification.

Bujian can also be helpful when you have forgotten how a character should be written and you need to ask for help. For example:

YOU: How do you write /yì/ as in /yì si/ (meaning)?
Friend: Oh, first you write a 立, then a 曰 beneath, then a 心 at the bottom.

You will know it’s written as 意.

Another example:

YOU: How do you write /kū/ (to cry)?
Friend: Two 口 side by side, then a 犬 underneath them. (哭)

As you can see, the knowledge of bushou and bujian is of practical importance.
Below is an excellent card game for children to practice their knowledge of bushou.

七大家族 Seven Families

七大家族原本是法國的一個傳統卡牌遊戲。我們將它改編成配合思展方程式課程的部首遊戲。
7 Families is a traditional French card game. We have adapted it to the Sage Formula course to help children to practice bushou.

道具 WHAT YOU NEED    準備 HOW TO PREPARE
  • 選定7個不同部首,每個部首從每級取出一個字,共35張字卡。(七個部首家族,每個家族有5個顏色成員。) Choose 7 different bushous. For each bushou, pick out 5 character cards, one from each level. You should have a total of 35 cards. (7 Bushou families, each has 5 members which are the 5 colours of the levles.)
  • 如要防止孩子利用卡背的顏色標記或拼音出貓,可以用和紙貼之類將它們先遮掩起來。You might want to cover up the colour markings or pinyin at the back of the cards, such as with washi tape, to prevent cheating.
  • 下表為你提供了12個部首的參考。The table below shows you an example, with 12 bushous.

HOW TO PLAY
  1. Each person gets 7 cards. Put the remaining cards in a stack, face (character side) down, in the centre.
  2. Player 1 asks any other player for 1 card, specifying the colour and the bushou Family, e.g.: "I want the blue card from the X Family".
  3. (a) If the player they asked has the card, s/he will give it to Player 1. (b) If the other player does not have the card, Player 1 will draw one card from the centre stack. Player 1 should call out “Got it” if the drawn card is exactly the one s/he asks for.
  4. (a) If Player 1 gets the card they asked for, whether it is from a player or a stack, they can play again and ask for another card. (b) If they do not, it is the next player's turn to ask for a card.
  5. A Family is formed when a player collects all 5 coloured cards of the same bushou. The player lays the completed Family down in front of them. All players continue to play.
  6. The game ends when all the cards have been used to form all of the Families.
  7. The one with most Families wins.
 玩法變化 ALTERNATIVE WAYS TO PLAY
  1. 年紀小的孩子,或是只學到某一級的孩子,每個部首的選字酌量減少。例如:只用頭2級的字 (14張) / 頭3級的字 (21張)…
  2. 孩子年紀小、人數少、時間不足…,也可以減少部首的數目。
  3. 可以請每個孩子將自己組成的部首家族中的字逐一讀出來,作為練習。
  1. If your children are very young or are only up to the first few levels, reduce the number of cards for each bushou, and limit to only the levels they have learnt.
  2. Reduce the number of bushou families if your children are very young, or if there are only 2-3 players, or if there is not enough time.
  3. You could ask each child to read out the characters in the bushou families they have formed.

熱身遊戲 ACTIVITIES TO WARM UP

我們特意為剛開始學習的小朋友設計了以下的兩款熱身遊戲。
We have designed 2 warm up activities for children who are just starting out.

(熱身一)部首大風吹 (age 3+ 歲, 一人以上遊戲 single or multiple players)

道具 WHAT YOU NEED    準備 HOW TO PREPARE
  • 選 2-7 張屬同一部首的字卡 + 1 張不同部首的字卡。Choose 2-7 characters of a same bushou, plus 1 character of a different bushou.
 玩法 HOW TO PLAY
  1. 將字卡(最少2張相同部首+1張不同部首)都排在孩子面前。
  2. 請孩子將不同部首的那張取走。
  1. Lay the study cards (at least 2 of the same bushou + 1 of a different bushou) in front of your child.
  2. Ask your child to pick out the one with a different bushou.
 玩法變化 ALTERNATIVE WAYS TO PLAY
  1. 年幼的孩子開始時減少字卡的數目。
  2. 年長或已掌握字數多的孩子可以增加字卡數目
  3. 年長或能力強的孩子,可以選幾個不同部首的字,每個部首有2個以上的字,再加一個單獨屬於一個部首的字 (例如:好/妹/她 3張 女部, 你/住 2張人部, 紅/給/綠 3張糸部, 然後只選一個 [河] 字屬水部),請孩子將不能與別的字成組的那張選出來。
  1. If your child is very young or is just starting out, use fewer cards.
  2. If your child is older and knows more characters, use more cards.
  3. If your child is older and knows more characters, you can also include 2+ cards of different bushous, plus 1 card of a bushou on its own (e.g. 好/妹/她 which are 女 bushou, 你/住 which are 人 bushou, 紅/給/綠 which are 糸 bushou, then 河 which is 水 bushou but is on its own here). Ask your child to pick out the odd one.

(熱身二)跟領袖 Follow the leader (age 3+ 歲, 2人以上遊戲 multiple players)

  • 按你所選的部首卡,每個部首選幾張字卡。(總數量可以是人數的5倍)。Following the bushou of what you have chosen, pick out several cards for each bushou. The total number of cards can be 5 times of the number of children.
 玩法 HOW TO PLAY
  1. 由你翻出一張部首卡,孩子在字卡堆中選出一個同部首的字。
  2. 要是孩子選對,那張字卡屬他。
  3. 你翻出另一張部首卡,由下一名孩子繼續。
  4. 要是與你翻出的部首相同的字已被取光,你再翻另一個部首讓孩子找。
  5. 大家輪流直到取光所有字卡。
  6. 最後最多字卡在手的孩子勝出。
  1. You deal 1 bushou card. The first child finds a character with the same bushou from the chosen cards.
  2. The child keeps the card if it is correct.
  3. You deal another bushou card. The next child finds a character with the same bushou.
  4. If there is no more of the character of the same bushou, you can deal another bushou card ask the child to look again.
  5. The children take turns until all the cards have been taken.
  6. The one with the most cards wins
 玩法變化 ALTERNATIVE WAYS TO PLAY
  1. 年幼的孩子開始時減少字卡的數目。
  2. 年長或已掌握字數多的孩子可以增加字卡數目
  1. If your child is very young or is just starting out, use fewer cards.
  2. If your child is older and knows more characters, use more cards.

看圖造句 From image to sentence

When children have learnt enough words, they naturally string them together and form sentences. Eventually, they will put all the sentences together to form speech. This is the natural development of a child’s language and thoughts.

Writing in Chinese is the same. Once your child has learnt enough characters, they can start to form words and sentences. Is writing not one of your child’s strengths? No worries. We can make use of the Study Cards. With the set of Study Cards, you child will be able to write beautiful sentences and craft stories.

To help them get started, we have designed two short stories, each containing 4 parts. We have even provided reference answers! But of course, you should always encourage your child to create their own stories. Let’s have a look below.

本週遊戲 ACTIVITIES OF THE WEEK

This is a great activity to engage your child in discussions about:

  • The correct order of the 4 images in each story
  • Your child’s thought about the stories
  • “When, where, what, who, why?”

Even very young children should be encouraged to discuss their ideas and thoughts. The sentences provided here only serve as examples and not “answers”.

As “一” was not taught as one of the 500 characters, we have created an additional sheet in the PDF file for you to cut out and use (see below download link).

This game is geared towards children who are about half way through Building Reader and up. Refer to the colour of the Study Cards on the reference sheet to decide whether or not your child is at the right level to play this game. For children who have not yet learnt certain characters, please provide necessary assistance by swapping them (e.g. 很多 instead of 許多), omitting them (e.g. 給 instead of 送給, 路上 instead of 半路上) or simply picking / reading the card for them.

看圖造句 Image to sentence (age 3+歲以上)

 WHAT YOU NEED 道具
  • 一張圖片,或幾將有關連的圖片 (歡迎下載參考圖)
  • 閱讀練習卡一套,你亦可自製字卡
  • 紙、筆 (視乎需要)
  • An image or a series of images (feel free to download our examples)
  • Study Cards, or you can make your own word cards
  • Pen / Pencil / Paper (optional)
 HOW TO PREPARE 事前準備

  • 下載PDF (文件包含了繁體及簡體版、圖片及額外的「一」字字卡)
  • 要是你想依照我們提供的參考句子玩遊戲,先從各級挑出所需的字卡準備好
  • Download the PDF (contains both traditional and simplified Chinese versions, larger version of the pictures, and the additional character 「一」)
  • If you prefer to follow the sample sentences, pick out the cards from various levels
 HOW TO PLAY 玩法
  1. 將圖片給孩子看。和孩子一起談談他看了圖以後的各種想法。要是你要用問題去引導他,盡量用開放式的問題。例如:你認為他為甚麼要…? (而不要問:他是不是要做…?)
  2. 請孩子根據他對圖的想法說一句 (或兩三句)話。
  3. 幫孩子一起從字卡中找出他那句話用過的字。
  4. 讓孩子用字卡組成他的句子。
  1. Show your child the image(s). Discuss the image(s) with your child.
  2. Ask your child to say one or more sentences about the image.
  3. Help your child to pick out the cards of the characters used in their sentence(s).
  4. Ask your child to arrange the cards to form their sentence(s).
 ALTERNATIVE WAYS TO PLAY

Depending on your child’s age and progress, you may want to make the following adjustments:

  1. For very young children, start with only one image card.
  2. For older children, use all four cards to tell a story.
  3. For very young children just starting out, you could read them the sentence and pick out the cards. They will then arrange the cards to form the correct sentence.
  4. For younger children, you could show them the reference sentences, and ask them to use the cards to “copy” the sentences.
  5. For older children who can already write, they can also write out the sentences they created. They can also have the choice of combining writing and using the cards (for example, using the cards to help with characters they don’t know how to write).
  6. This activity can be played with one child, or with multiple children as teamwork.

溫提 Additional tips:

可以幫孩子將他造的句抄下來,或是將他排出來的字卡句子用手機拍下來。
You could copy down the sentences that your child has created, or take a photo of each of the sentences that your child made with the cards.

** 我們日後會繼續發表這類造句用的故事圖片。請不時留意BLOG的消息。We will continue to create more images for such sentence forming activity. Please check back regularly.

老編心得 TIP OF THE WEEK

正如要有健康的體魄就要吃健康的食品,避免junk food;孩子的語文發展也需要多看、多讀、多聽高質素的內容。當你為孩子選圖書時固然會仔細挑選,與此同時在這個階段也應該避免讓他們接觸太口語化或不正規的書寫方式,以免他們產生混淆。

Form a habit of playing some kind of Chinese language games each week.
Playing these games is a way of making the language practical and part of their lives. Children learn to manipulate the characters and words, and thus become actively engaged in the language. This provides additional stimulation compared to passively reading from books.

同聲同氣同音字 Homophone card games

Homophones are one of the major features of Chinese. One effective way to introduce this important feature to children is through games. Such games help increase children's awareness to homophones. They are also effective ways to systematically expand their vocabulary, and to help them remember those words. A solid understanding of homophones and rhyming characters will help children develop writing ability in future.

The game described here is adapted to the Basic Chinese 500 courseWith the help of these Study Cards, you can adjust the game to suit your child's progress.

*Note: the game is based on Putonghua pronunciation.

WHAT YOU NEED 道具   HOW TO PREPARE 事前準備

初級 (啟蒙級 - 躍進級)

進階 (信心級 & 實力級)

 HOW TO PLAY 玩法
  1. 將孩子已學過的漢字字卡洗亂,陣列在孩子面前,字面向上
  2. 讓孩子選一張字卡,請他讀出來 (讀出後,可以用卡背的拼音檢查是否正確)
  3. 請孩子將另一張同音字指出來
  1. Choose the homophone characters that your child has already learnt. Mix up the cards and lay them out in front of your child, with the characters facing upwards.
  2. Ask the child to choose one card, and read it out loud. (You could check the pronunciation with help of the pinyin at the back of the card)
  3. Ask the child to point out the other character which is pronounced the same as the one they just picked up.
 ALTERNATIVE WAYS TO PLAY 玩法變化

視乎孩子的情況,你可以增加以下的活動:

  1. 每當孩子拿起一個字,問問孩子:記得這個字在書中哪裏出現過嗎?記得那句句子嗎?
  2. 每個字請孩子 說一句含有這個字的話。這樣不但可以學習運用和造句,還可以幫助孩子清楚識別兩個同音字的不同意義和用法。

Depending on your child’s age and progress, you can incorporate the following activities:

  1. For each card your child picked up, ask if they can remember where in the books they have seen this character, and if they can remember the sentence(s).
  2. Ask your child to make up and say one more sentence, using this character. This will ensure your child understands the differences between the two homophones.

老編心得 TIP OF THE WEEK

將語文遊戲帶到生活中。
例如要學韻字,可以選定一個字(例如「爸」),當天之內遇到或用到與這個字押韻的就指出來:小巴、菊花、蝦… 從這些不必認讀的語文遊戲開始,讓孩子漸漸感到語文的各種趣味性,日後再搬到紙上就容易多了。

Make learning FUN.
Encourage your child to invent their own words, no matter how silly or “wrong” they might sound. Soon you’ll realise even with made up words, they sound Chinese and they follow some Chinese linguistic patterns. Congratulations! It’s a sign that they are feeling the language. And when their made-up words do sound like some existing ones, write down the existing words for your child.

The story of 回

來回、回答、回旋、春回大地...
回,象徵着循環持續、延綿不斷。也許你會問:回字兩個口,跟吃的有關係嗎?

呵呵... 原來回字是象形文字,由一圈又一圈的回旋圖案演變出來。

看完影片,可以下載相關的資源喔。

You might wonder, since 回 is written as 2 口, is it related to our mouth or eating?

No, in fact 回 is a pictogram which was evolved from the pattern of "never ending" spirals. It symbolises repetition, continuity, and never ending prosperity.

Please feel free to download the related worksheets after you've watched the video.

Academic traditions in China

We are now at the time of the year where families begin to gear up and prepare for the new academic year. Whether this is met with enthusiasm or despair in your household, the back to school season is a particularly exciting one.  Children get ready to spend another year educating and cultivating themselves – while of course, making friends and memories in the process.

It goes without saying that all nations have their own traditions and philosophy with regards to education.  Here, we’ll share a few ways Chinese approaches certain milestones in a student’s life, such as the first day of school and graduation.

The first day of school

In modern day China, the first day of school is 1 September, although most schools elect to start on the first Monday of September. Like in most other countries, the first day of school consists of the regular activities: receiving new timetables, meeting new classmates and greeting the teachers.

Early in the past century, a tradition would be for students to bring a few presents to their teachers on the first day. Each student would bring three things: garlic, celery, and green onion.

Why these three items? Well, they were all play on words.

Garlic, is 蒜 (suàn) in Chinese which is the same sound as算, meaning maths.

Green onion, is 蔥 (cōng) in Chinese which is the same sound as 聰 in 聰明, meaning clever or with wit.

Celery, 芹 (qín) in Chinese which is the same sound as 勤, meaning diligent and hard working.

能算、會勤、plus 聰明 were considered the three main “ingredients” to a student’s success. These three gifts serve as a symbolic commitment as well as good fortune for the student throughout the coming school year.

Nowadays, the students are usually addressed by the headmaster and a star pupil, both of whom deliver eloquent speeches about their devotion to their school, gratitude for the teachers, and commitments to ambition and success.

Graduation

Graduation is a momentous occasion for students, parents and teachers alike, as students move on from their current phase of education. At a university graduation ceremony – like in many other nations – students are handed their hard-earned diplomas, and teachers deliver celebratory speeches, congratulating students for their efforts. While most students wear traditional academic, black robes for their graduation, it is also not uncommon for them to wear qipao, Chinese traditional dress.

What is more specific to China, however, is the 謝師宴: the banquet to thank the teachers. This happens usually at high school or university graduations. Here, students all chip in to book a banquet, and invite all the teachers who have taught them throughout the years to attend. Students might prepare a talent show, and deliver a speech to formally thank all the teachers. Teachers would also express their good wishes for the students moving forward.

Although after this banquet, students and teachers are considered equals, since the students are now adults and members of the society, there is this saying: “一日為師,終身為父” in Chinese. It means if someone is your teacher for even a single day, s/he will be like your parent for the rest of your life. Students are forever in the teachers’ debt.

Some study-related Idioms

There are many idioms in Chinese that encapsulate what it means and how it feels to be a student. Here are a couple:

十年寒窗
Literally, this means to study for ten years by a cold window. This idiom illustrates the hardships students are willing to endure and perseverance it takes to get through the long years of study. From this idiom comes the expression 同窗, which means ‘classmate’ or ‘schoolmate’ – someone who also sat by the same cold window with us for those years.
聞雞起舞
This idiom means to start practicing at the sound of the cockerel’s first crow. It describes is the act of self-discipline and being diligent in one’s studies, of being so committed that one would begin practicing and studying at the break of dawn every day.

As you can see from the above image, in each of the above idioms, there is one character that is not included in Basic Chinese 500. (The ones included in the syllabus are shown in proper Study Cards.)

Why not take this opportunity and learn them?

Here, let us show you their proper pinyin and writing sequences (click on image to enlarge):

Pinyin: /hán/
Traditional Chinese and Simplified Chinese are written in the same way.

Pinyin: /wén/
Traditional Chinese version

Pinyin: /wén/

下雨天是孩子最容易產生深刻印象、最能理解的自然現象;

Expand your child’s Chinese vocabulary

You might have learnt some distinct features of the Chinese language from our other blog posts, such as idioms, die-ci (reduplication), homographs, radicals, etc.

In this post, we discuss another feature: forming a new word by combining two antonyms.

Learning new characters is no doubt a great way to expand a child’s vocabulary. However, you can also introduce new words to your child based on characters they have already learnt, since Chinese words are but combinations of characters. Introducing new words this way helps them understand the relationship between the new word and the words they already knew. It can also stimulate their linguistic understanding and deepen their comprehension of not only the language, but also of the culture and the people’s mentality.

Here, we have chosen twenty characters from the Sagebooks curriculum which form ten new words. This serves as an introduction to this method of forming words.

字(1) Word 1 字(2) Word 2 新組詞 New Word
Big Small 大小 Size
Square Round 方圓 Perimeter
High Low 高低 comparative strength
Right Wrong 是非 Trouble
Pain / Suffer Fast / Happy 痛快 Delighted, To one's heart's content
Early / Morning Late / Night 早晚 Sooner or later
Left side Right side 左右 To influence
Out In 出入 Discrepancy / Exit and Entrance
Long Short 長短 Length
Many Few 多少 How many? / A certain amount or extend

The meanings of the above 10 words are related to each of the characters in the word. Please take the time to explain each of them to your child. It will spark their interest to learn more of the language, or languages on the whole.

Flip-Flop Fun is a set of books that focuses on the study of antonyms and synonyms. It helps your child to learn more words such as those listed in the above table.

All of those characters are taught in the Sagebooks curriculum.
