This is the beginning of a series where you can find time tested tips from our more seasoned parents as well as fun and easy activities to supplement your Sagebooks experience. As much as children love the illustrations in the books and stories, the more ways we can make learning Chinese characters fun, the better!
We know you’re a busy parent so these posts will be quick and to the point.
ACTIVITY OF THE WEEK
每個孩子都有自己獨特的學習方式。有的光靠看書就能吸收、記牢，有的喜愛透過身體動作的投入加深學習記憶。相信很多家長對這個簡單的字卡配對遊戲都不陌生，因此玩起來很容易。再者你也可以按孩子的情況將遊戲簡化或加深。
你可以一次過將孩子所認識的字全部都用在這遊戲中。但我們建議你可以將孩子很熟悉的幾個字與他感到困難的幾個字混在一起，這樣你可以更有效地幫助他練習他感到困難的字，同時又可以藉着遊戲避免他感到受挫。
Children process and learn differently. Some do well just going through the books and others need kinesthetic activities. Here, we’re starting off with a card matching game that will be familiar to most parents as well as really easy to do. Plus, you can make the cards as elaborate or as simple as you want.
You can do it with all the characters. But as we know you’re busy, we recommend doing a small mix of characters your child finds super easy as well as the characters your child is having a hard time retaining. That way, you efficiently review trouble characters without discouraging your child.
道具 WHAT YOU NEED
- 紙 paper
- 剪刀 scissors
- 筆 pen
* 其他可考慮採用的道具：卡紙、冰棍棒、圓形木牌、毛絨紙、過膠機、過膠袋、思展閱讀練習卡
* Alternate materials: cardstock, popsicle sticks, round wooden discs, felt, laminator, laminating pouches, Sagebooks Study Cards
準備 HOW TO MAKE
- 將卡紙裁成你要的尺寸和數量
- 將同一個字寫在兩張裁好的卡紙上 (也可以一張寫字、另一張畫相關的圖像)
- 按同一方式完成所有你需要的字
- Cut out cards in the size and amount you want
- Write the character on 2 cards (or write one character and one drawing of the character)
- Repeat until you are done with all the characters you want to use.
*閃速提示：你可以將字卡過膠，增加它們的耐用性。
*Quick Tip: To make the cards last longer, you can laminate before you cut.
遊戲方法 HOW TO PLAY
記憶遊戲 (4歲以上，一人或以上遊戲) Memory (age 4+, multi or single players)
1) 將字卡洗均勻，正面向下放在桌子或地上。
2) 由第一個人翻出兩張卡。要是兩張卡能配對，他可取走字卡保存，並繼續再翻兩張。要是不能成對，就輪到下一個人。
3) 每人輪流翻字卡，直至所有字卡都被取去。
4) 取得最多字卡的孩子勝出。
*其他遊戲變化: 單一個孩子玩、不設贏家、或每人每次只能翻一次，即使能配對也輪到下一人。
1) Shuffle cards and place them face down on a flat surface.
2) Player 1 flips over two cards. If they match, they keep the pair and go again. If they do not match, their turn is over.
3) Rotate through all the players until all cards are gone.
4) Winner is the player with the most cards.
*Alternate ways to play: single player; no winner; or turn is over even after there is a matched pair.
配對遊戲 (3歲以上，一人或多人遊戲) Matching (age 3+, multi or single players)
1. 將2-5張字卡面各上，排放在桌面或地上
2. 將另一套配對的字卡交給孩子
3. 讓孩子將手中的字卡和已排放的字卡配對
4. 完成後，可以用相同的字卡重複遊戲，也可以選另一批新字卡
*其他遊戲杗式: 改變字卡的數量 (例如: 只排放一張字卡，面向上，而將2-5張字卡交給孩子，讓他選出能配對的字卡)
1. Lay 2-5 cards face up on a flat surface
2. Give your child the matching cards
3. Have child match their cards to the ones on the flat surface
4. Repeat either with the same cards or with a different set.
*Alternate ways to play: vary number of cards (eg: lay just 1 card face up and give child 2-5 cards and have them find the right one to match)

孩子記不牢新學的生字？別擔心。慢慢來就行。
孩子的記憶會受到很多因素影響，例如年齡、認知發展、情緒是否穩定、有沒有滋擾⋯等等。持之以恆、假以時日，當孩子對新的學習規律熟習了，就自然會印到腦海中，成為他鞏固的知識。
Don’t worry if your child doesn’t remember new characters right away. It takes time.
Memory depends on so many factors such as age, cognitive development, emotional maturity, distractions, and many more. Give your child and yourself grace and time to get used to learning new things and integrating them in their brain.
