(6) Summary of Tips(6)

Read Wide and Deep

Read plenty of books, magazines, short stories in as many different genres as possible. Fiction seems to naturally be the easiest because children love to learn about different stories, but remember, there are so many other types of writing to read. For example: current events, recipes, science, religious, poems, song lyrics, plays, instructions, history, comics, pop-culture, and even tabloids.

Just as there are different foods for different purposes, there are different types of materials we can use to increase our kids’ vocabulary. The purpose of some foods – such as junk food – is simply to be fun. It isn’t nutritious but your body still uses it and extracts what it needs while excreting what it does not. The thing is, learning Chinese and reading it should be fun. So short of completely inappropriate materials, provide your child with as many varieties of writing as possible. All of it will be incorporated within your children’s memory to provide a robust and agile linguistic foundation.

Persist

PharmGirl gave lots of advice to fellow Sagebooks parents and her first tip was for parents with multiple children:

“Recognize that each child is different. It’s OK to take a break from Sagebooks. But persist.”

Set up a Routine

Just like experts recommend a bedtime routine to signal and prepare your children for sleep, you can use routinesto signal and prepare your children to learn.

Choose a set time and place for you and your child to read and review Sagebooks together. Perhaps it’s right after bathtime and before they go to sleep. Do they have a prefered stuffed

animal or toy they can hold? Or do you prefer to do Sagebooks first thing in the morning at breakfast? Perhaps when you’re waiting for another child to finish a class or activity?

Whatever it is, setting these routines helps you remember to do Sagebooks because the time or activity is the cue for your reading. If you don’t end up doing the routine, you might find that you forget to read Sagebooks because it is so ingrained in your minds!

It's OK to skip doing crafts and activities

Don’t stressabout doing crafts and activities to help your child learn characters.

Even if you don’t do anything extra, your child will still do well and learn the 500 Sagebooks characters. Life is busy and full of enough pressure and expectations. There is no need to add even more on your shoulders.

The Sagebooks Basic Chinese 500 curriculum is designed so that each successive chapter builds on the previous ones. There is plenty of built-in review within the lessons and even if you never pick up a flash card or do a fun activity, your child will be fine and learn just as well as if you did.

These suggested activities are for fun and completely optional. Please do not feel as if you must do them.
